Ezekiel and Jeremiah were contemporaries. Jeremiah was senior and had been a prophet from the 13th year of Josiah. Ezekiel did not begin his prophetic office until the 5th year of Jehoiachin's captivity. Thus they would have been prophesying at the same time during the 11 plus years of the reign of Zedekiah. Ezekiel was among the captives in Babylon while Jeremiah was in the city of Jerusalem throughout the reign of Zedekiah including the final siege of the city

Ezekiel

Why 606 and 585

There are different chronologies followed by various authors and this is one thing that accounts for the differing dates ascribed to the sequence leading up to the fall of Jerusalem that we will date as 585 BC. Another thing is the method of counting part of a year as one year that is a part of Biblical reckoning. For instance December of year one to January of year three would be counted as three years when it amounts to one year and two months. We choose the date of 606 BC as the beginning of the Babylonia exile in the 3rd or 4th year of Jehoiakim. The short period of Jehoiachin is in the same year as the first of Zedekiah or 598 - 597 BC Counting the 8th year Nebuchadnezzar to the 19th year is 12 years. Thus the fall of Jerusalem was in 585 according to this reckoning.

Ezekiel 1

1Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. 2In the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of king Jehoiachin's captivity,

606 plus the rest of Jehoiakim's reign. Eight years from 606 is circa 598 or 597 BC 2nd. Kings 24 12And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, and his princes, and his officers: and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign. Ezekiel 33 21And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one who had escaped out of Jerusalem came to me, saying, The city has been struck. 2Kings 25 2And the city was besieged to the eleventh year of king Zedekiah. 3And on the ninth day of the fourth month the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land. 4And the city was broken up,

Ezekiel 40:1 In the twenty fifth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was struck, in the selfsame day the hand of the LORD was on me, and brought me there. 2In the visions of God he brought me into the land of Israel, and set me on a very high mountain, by which was as the shape of a city on the south

Forty days - Reckon, says Archbishop Newcome, near fifteen years and six months in the reign of Manasseh, two years in that of Amon, three months in that of Jehoahaz, eleven years in that of Jehoiakim, three months and ten days in that of Jehoiachin, and eleven years in that of Zedekiah; and there arises a period of forty years, during which gross idolatry was practiced in the kingdom of Judah.
