Satraps and satrapies
Satraps (Old Persian khaçapavan): the governors of the satrapies (provinces) of the ancient Persian empire. There are several catalogues of these parts of the empire; the best known are Darius' Behistun inscription and the tribute list included in the Histories of the Greek researcher Herodotus. Other catalogues are the inscription on Darius' grave at Naq-i-Rustam, an inscription by Xerxes and the satrapies mentioned in a book about Alexander the Great, the Anabasis by Arrian. (Although there are differences, there are more similarities, as this table indicates.
